Mentoring for graduate students

Mentoring for graduate students

Looking to connect with a mentor who’s been in your shoes?

The Statistics Department’s Alumni Mentoring Program is a chance for first year graduate students to be paired one-on-one with a Statistics or Data Analytics alum who can share real-world insights, offer career guidance and help you explore your interests and goals. You'll meet with your mentor once per term to talk about everything from job paths to graduate school to life after university.

Whether you're unsure about your next steps or just want to learn from someone with experience, this program is a great way to build connections and get personalized support on your journey.

Guidance for students

  • Take initiative: You’re in the driver’s seat! Reach out to your mentor first and schedule a time to meet.
  • Stay committed: Plan to meet with your mentor at least once per term throughout the program.
  • Keep communication open: Be open about your thoughts, questions, feedback and any challenges. Building trust will make this experience more meaningful.
  • Respect their time: Come to meetings prepared and on time. Make the most of your time together.
  • Keep it confidential: Respect each other’s privacy by keeping discussions between you.

Tips for your first meeting

  • Set an agenda: Think about what you'd like to get out of the mentorship and be ready to talk about your goals.
  • Share your story: Take some time to share your personal and professional journeys.
  • Be curious: Don’t hesitate to ask for advice on specific topics, whether it’s career-related or about navigating life after school. Your mentor is here to help you!
