This year, our students and faculty have been busy traveling around the world to attend conferences and enhance their professional development. Presented work included topics such as: community detection and missing data imputation, detecting changes in dispersion in COVID-19 Incidence time series, spatio-temporal Modeling of Racial/Ethnic Disparities in COVID-19, and using a generalized linear model to reveal spatial patterns in plant reproduction.
OSU Hosted Conferences
The Statistics Department brought two conferences to OSU this summer. Taking place on OSU’s Corvallis campus was the New Researcher Conference (NRC). The NRC was co-organized by faculty member, Dr. Yuan Jiang. The NRC aims to foster networking and collaboration among emerging researchers in the fields of biostatistics, probability, and statistics. On Oregon State University's Cascade campus, we welcomed approximately 30 participants at the Conference on Innovative Statistics and Machine Learning for Data Science and AI (ISML). The attendees were leading researchers in statistics and machine learning and keynote presentations were delivered by Professor Xihong Lin from Harvard University and Professor Xuming He from Washington University in St. Louis. The conference also featured five sessions covering topics such as cutting-edge advances in machine learning and network analysis as well as new developments in statistical and machine learning methods for sports and health studies.
State-wide and International Conferences
Approximately eight of our students traveled to Portland, Oregon to attend the Joint Statistical Meeting (JSM). The annual JSM brings statisticians and data scientists from all over North America and is one of the largest statistics events in the world. The 2024 conference theme was Statistics and Data Science: Informing Policy and Countering Misinformation.
Dr. Katie McLaughlin attended two international conferences. She presented her work, Targeted Random Door-to-Door Sampling Design for COVID-19 Informed by Community Wastewater at the 2023 BigSurb23 Conference in Quito, Ecuador. Additionally, she visited Cairo, Egypt this past spring to co-instruct the workshop, Data Analysis and Population Size Estimations using RDS Analyst for the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population.
